Golden Nineties - Something to Shout About
The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center is seeking the names of Cleveland County residents who are 90 years old and above. Each year the Council on Aging celebrates the longevity of this extraordinary population of Cleveland County as well as Older Americans Month with a very special luncheon. Being 90 years old or more is definitely something to shout about and the COA/Senior Center plans to shout out loud as we celebrate the lives and accomplishments of the county's Golden 90's and above. The Golden Nineties Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2008, beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Neal Senior Center, located at 100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.
If you know someone who is 90 years old or older, please contact Lisa Abernethy at 704-482-3488 or via email at labernethy@agingcouncil.org (please provide mailing address and birth date of the 90+ year old person), so that we may personally invite him or her to the luncheon. Providing this information does not automatically sign this person up to attend the luncheon, it just guarantees that an invitation will be mailed. Persons attending the luncheon will have an opportunity to sign-up for the luncheon in April 2008.

New Lines of Communication
The Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center is creating an e-mail address book. Persons who wish to share their email addresses with the COA/Senior Center, will receive updates and announcements about upcoming events, classes, programs, you name it. By sending this info via email, the Center can reduce postage and paper costs and provide you with up-to-date information. Your email address will be guarded and will never be sold to any agency or business.
Don't have an email address? Let the Center help you learn to navigate the Worldwide Web and email. Our computer lab is open, Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and our Computer Lab Volunteers will be happy to assist you.
To become an inaugural member of our e-mail address book, please send an email to labernethy@agingcouncil.org, with the following in the subject line, "Add my address."

Support Groups
After the death of a spouse, one deals not only with personal bereavement, but also with new dilemmas in almost every aspect of life.
Employment, financial and legal affairs, housing arrangements, and even meal preparation are all situations that present new challenges for both the widow and the widower.
In handling these altered circumstances, many people around the country are finding an important source of support and guidance in voluntary widowed persons programs, which put them in touch with others who have themselves, experienced similar situations.
The Cleveland County Council on Aging/Senior Center has both a Ladies Support Group and a Men's Support Group for persons 55 years of age or older. These groups provide a variety of programs that deal with such topics as caring for your car, depression, cooking for one, self-protection and health information.
Coping with life after the death of a loved one becomes even more difficult as one realizes and deals with unfamiliar activities and loneliness. If you are a widowed person in Cleveland County, you are welcome to become a part of the healing and growing process we offer. The Men's support meets first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 at the Senior Center for lunch. The Ladies Support Group meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Senior Center at 11:30 for lunch.

TELEPHONE REASSURANCE
Do you, or someone you know, live alone and have little contact with people? If the answer is yes, then the Council on Aging Telephone Reassurance Program might be for you. This program is especially for seniors age 60 and above that need for someone to make contact with them Monday through Friday.
On these days a volunteer will call to make sure that you are up and okay. If the volunteer does not get an answer they will notify a contact person that will come check on you. If you are interested in this program, or being a volunteer to make calls with the Telephone Reassurance Program please call Kathy at 704-482-3488.
